Drill Pipe, an essential component crafted from hollow, thin-walled, steel piping that plays a crucial role in drilling rigs and horizontal drilling operations, enabling the effective creation of a wellbore. Available in various sizes, strengths, and weights, these pipes typically span 27 to 32 feet in length (Range 2), with longer options reaching up to 45 feet (Range 3). Their hollow structure permits drilling fluid to circulate seamlessly through them, flowing down into the well and ascending back through the annulus.
Designed to transfer significant drilling torque across lengths often surpassing a mile into the Earth's crust,these robust tempered steel tubes represent a significant investment. To maximize their value, owners meticulously inspect and reuse them post-well completion. Both on-site and off-site inspections utilize advanced devices akin to the spherometer to detect any defects in the metallurgy,thus preventing potential fractures during future drilling operations. New drill pipes start with a new (N class) designation, progress to premium (P-class), and eventually degrade to C class (C 1 to 3) as wear affects the outside diameter. Ultimately, they may be deemed scrap and marked with a red band.
The drill pipe forms part of the comprehensive drill string, which includes both the drill pipe and the bottom hole assembly (BHA), the latter being closest to the drill bit. The BHA features thicker-walled heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP) and drill collars, which boast a larger diameter and reduced internal diameter, offering weight and rigidity to the drill bit and assembly. Additional BHA components might consist of mud motors, measurement while drilling collars (MWD), stabilizers, and other specialized downhole tools. The drill stem encompasses the entire drill string plus the kelly, which delivers rotation and torque to the drill pipe.
